There are many users that buy their domain names with GoDaddy but later they decide to use the hosting services of another company while still having their domain name with GoDaddy. In this tutorial we will take a look at how a domain name that was registered with GoDaddy can be pointed to Bluehost.

Here are the steps to do this.

Point GoDaddy domain to Bluehost by changing the name servers

1. Log in to your GoDaddy account and navigate to My Products > Domains.

2. Locate the domain name that you want to point to Bluehost and click on the DNS button.

3. You will see a screen like the following:

4. Scroll down to the Name Servers section and click on the Change button right after the ‘Using default nameservers’ message.

5. For ‘Choose your new nameserver type’ select Custom from the drop-down menu and enter the default Bluehost name servers which are ns1.bluehost.com and ns2.bluehost.com .

6. Click on the Save button and wait from 5 minutes to 1 hour for the changes to have effect. By default the DNS propagation may need up to 48 hours and even up to 72 hours in some cases.

However, the domain should start resolving the new name servers in the first hour. If you don’t see any change, try to clear your local DNS cache. Clearing your browser’s cache could help as well.

Point GoDaddy domain to Bluehost by changing the A record

Pointing your GoDaddy domain to Bluehost by A record only is the ideal situation when you want to have your site loading from your account with Bluehost. If you modify your domain’s A record only, all of the other services such as emails will remain still with GoDaddy.

1. Log in to your GoDaddy account and navigate to My Products > Domains.

2. Locate the domain name that you want to point to Bluehost and click on the DNS button.

3. The next screen will look like this:

4. Click on the pencil icon in order to change the value for the A record of the domain.

5. Enter the A record of your account with Bluehost and click on the Save button.

Congratulations! Your domain at GoDaddy was pointed successfully by A record to your account with Bluehost.
